What medium was your favorite to work with?
I enjoyed using the pencil method to draw the outline of my pictures and add shading and textures in order to make the images look more realistic. I have had experience with working with this method before, so that made the graphite unit one of the most enjoyable. At the beginning of the semester, I was required to draw four different drawings and use them as my first post on the digital portfolio. For these drawings, I preferred using pencil.

Here is one of the drawings I did for that assignment. When drawing the pair of shoes, I used pencil to draw the outline and shade in parts of the objects. I also was able to arrange the objects in a way that would make the image more interesting. I did this by placing one of the shoes in front of the other in the picture. However, I believe for this piece, I could have improved the shading by adding more value or transitions from light sections to darker ones, so that it would look more like the actual reference picture I took.
This practice sheet helped me improve my use of the graphite methods in later projects. This is because here, I practiced shading the different forms from a dark area to a light area, including a highlighted section that remained mostly unshaded. This gave the images more contrast, which made it an improvement from my earlier pencil drawings. I also added a shadow to make it seem more three-dimensional than the pieces I did before this.
This piece helped me improve my ability to draw the outline of objects using the contour method. In the assignment, I had to do a drawing in pen and in pencil. I believe that the one in pencil came out the best because I was able to make the design more similar to the reference image, and I used texture to add details to the drawing. This assignment, along with the shading methods I learned earlier, allowed me to create a final project that I believe came out well.
This is the final project I did in the graphite unit, where I had to pick an object in my house that usually went unnoticed and draw it using the methods I learned in this class. Here, I was able to add shading by using a variety of drawing pencils to shade in the sections that needed to be darker, so that they would contrast with the light sections. This was shown on the cords, which were darker than the carpet around them. I also was able to use what I learned on the form-shading assignment to add value transitions in some places, like the power button and the cord that was shown lying on the floor. I also used texture when drawing the carpet to make it look like the reference image I was using. I believe that I could have improved my use of perspective here. This would make it seem like the section with the sockets and cords was actually above the carpet and more three-dimensional, instead of appearing to still be flat.
Ultimately, I found the pencil unit to be the most enjoyable for me. I will be using the methods and techniques I learned in class on future projects and drawings.
